Delhi’s Air Quality Remains Poor Amidst Rising AQI Levels

NEW DELHI: On November 1, Delhi’s air quality remained firmly in the ‘poor’ category, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) escalating to 251, a spike from 218 just a day earlier. This data, released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), indicates a concerning trend as residents brace for another day of unhealthy air.

According to the CPCB’s Sameer app, several areas in Delhi faced significant pollution levels. In fact, AQI readings at eight locations recorded values classified as ‘very poor.’ Such elevated pollution levels pose health risks to the city’s inhabitants, especially vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

Wazirpur emerged as the most affected area, charting the highest AQI figure at 333. This reading sharply underscores the dire air quality conditions facing many residents. Other parts of the city also reported poor air quality, further complicating daily activities for the people of Delhi.

The government and health experts continue to urge residents to take precautions. They recommend minimizing outdoor activities, particularly in the early morning and evening when pollution levels tend to peak. The adverse effects of poor air quality notably contribute to respiratory ailments and can exacerbate existing health issues.

Despite ongoing initiatives aimed at tackling air pollution, persistent issues like vehicular emissions, industrial activities, and seasonal crop burning contribute to the deteriorating air quality in the capital. The city has seen some efforts to combat these challenges through various measures, including the promotion of electric vehicles and stricter industrial regulations.

However, experts argue that immediate and effective actions are essential to bring lasting improvements. Dr. Anjali Gupta, a public health expert, stated, “Without addressing the root causes of pollution, these efforts will have limited effect. The health of millions of Delhi residents is at stake.” Policymakers are now under increasing pressure to prioritize clean air initiatives as air quality continues to worsen.

The situation demands urgent attention. As the government and its agencies work on long-term solutions, residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary health precautions. Delhi’s battle against poor air quality is far from over, and as the season progresses, the potential for even worsening conditions looms on the horizon.
