In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing an astonishing 6 kilograms at birth. This case ranks among the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution. Born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM to a diabetic mother, the infant faced severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, medical staff promptly admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Immediate action included specialized neonatal respiratory support tailored to address the baby’s large-for-gestational-age condition and respiratory compromise. The healthcare team closely monitored various health indicators such as respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity.
Over the following days, the newborn demonstrated significant improvement, allowing the medical staff to gradually reduce the respiratory support. By the final 72 hours prior to discharge, the baby exhibited stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation. Notably, there were no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation during this critical observation period.
Following a sustained period of clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in healthy condition. The medical team advised routine follow-up care to ensure continued health and well-being.
The successful management of this challenging case stands as a testament to the expertise and diligence of the pediatric team under the leadership of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics. The team included esteemed faculty members such as Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma, alongside a dedicated group of senior and junior residents.
Special acknowledgment goes to the nursing and paramedical staff of GMC Doda. Their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care played a crucial role in the baby’s recovery, demonstrating the importance of teamwork in neonatal care.
This achievement not only highlights the growing neonatal expertise within the GMC Doda’s Pediatrics Department but also reflects its ongoing commitment to delivering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children across the region. As GMC Doda continues to enhance its neonatal services, the institution reinforces its role as a critical provider of healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir.
