Srinagar Shivers: Coldest Night This Winter at -2.1°C

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experienced its coldest night of the season on November 15, as temperatures dipped to minus 2.1°C, according to the Meteorological (MeT) Department. The cold snap marks a significant shift in weather patterns as winter settles into the region.

As per the MeT data, Pahalgam recorded even lower temperatures, becoming the coldest location in the Kashmir Valley with the mercury sinking to minus 3.8°C. This severe drop indicates the region is experiencing harsh winter conditions, a trend expected to persist over the coming days.

Director of MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, shared insights into the weather forecast for the upcoming week. He stated, “There is no indication of any wet spell for the next week, with night temperatures likely remaining stable until November 17.” He cautioned that while the current conditions may seem daunting, a slight improvement in night temperatures may occur after this date, lasting a couple of days.

The drop in temperatures has led to frost formation in parts of Srinagar and surrounding areas during early morning hours. Residents have begun preparing for the difficult winter ahead, covering outdoor plants and ensuring home heating appliances are functional.

MeT officials emphasized the importance of taking precautions against the intense cold, especially for vulnerable populations. The department advises residents to dress warmly and limit outdoor activities during peak cold hours to maintain health and safety.

The chill in the air also draws attention to the stunning winter landscape of Kashmir, turning the region into a picturesque winter wonderland. Many are drawn to the Valley during this season to experience the serene snowfall and breathtaking views, despite the challenging weather.

Historical data suggests that temperatures in this part of the world can fluctuate dramatically as winter progresses. Residents remember previous years where the cold hit sub-zero levels, drastically impacting daily life and routines. Local businesses, especially those in the hospitality sector, often see a mix of struggles and opportunities.

The MeT Department continues to monitor the situation closely, providing daily updates to keep residents informed. For now, the focus remains on weather adaptation as the people of Srinagar brace themselves for the winter ahead.
