Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the land subsidence-hit Kalaban border area in Poonch district, where over 1,000 people have been affected by the recent floods and landslides. Abdullah expressed hope that the Centre will extend a relief package to the Union Territory, similar to those given to Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Flood Relief Efforts
The administration has been asked to prepare a rehabilitation plan, including the grant of five marlas of land under the existing policy, for the approval of the Cabinet. Abdullah also mentioned that the government has a scheme to provide landless people with five marlas of government land, which will be used to resettle those affected by the floods.
Abdullah assessed the damage caused by land subsidence in Kalaban village, where over 95 houses, a graveyard, and a mosque have been damaged. Residents have been relocated to safe shelters, and the government is working to provide relief and rehabilitation to the affected areas.
Centre’s Support
Abdullah said that the central government has constituted a team to visit the affected areas and assess the damage. He expressed hope that the Centre will provide a good package to Jammu and Kashmir, considering the extent of the damage caused by the floods and landslides.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that the government will use its financial resources to ensure relief reaches the people affected by the floods. He emphasized the need for outreach efforts to help people in this difficult time, stating that it is the government’s duty to provide assistance to those in need.
Affected Areas
Abdullah noted that hardly any district in Jammu and Kashmir has been left untouched by the floods, landslides, or heavy rains. The government is working to provide relief and rehabilitation to all affected areas, with a focus on resettling those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
