External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for stronger solidarity among Global South nations during a pivotal meeting on September 26, 2023, in New York, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting gathered like-minded Global South countries to discuss collective strategies for reforming international institutions, particularly the UN.
Speaking to representatives of various developing nations, Jaishankar highlighted the pressing need for a renewed commitment to multilateralism. He stated, “In the face of a proliferation of global concerns and multiplicity of risks, it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.” These remarks reflect a growing recognition that the Global South must leverage its collective power to address shared challenges.
Jaishankar outlined a structured approach encompassing five key proposals aimed at enhancing the influence of developing nations in global governance. He stressed the necessity of utilizing existing forums to bolster consultations and collaborations among Global South countries. This strategy aims to enhance solidarity and foster mutual support.
The minister emphasized the importance of comprehensive reform in the UN and multilateralism as a whole. He argued that the Global South must showcase its specific strengths and achievements, such as innovations in vaccines, digital capabilities, education, agro-practices, and the potential of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). By doing so, these nations can significantly contribute to global discussions.
Jaishankar also brought attention to the need for an equitable approach to pressing global issues, particularly in climate action and justice. He urged Global South countries to develop initiatives that serve their unique interests instead of merely adopting the perspectives of the Global North, which have often dominated international discourse.
Moreover, discussions on emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, featured prominently in Jaishankar’s address. He advocated for proactive engagement in technological developments to ensure that developing countries do not fall behind in the rapidly changing global landscape. “It’s vital that the Global South actively participates in shaping technology policies that will define our future,” he noted.
India’s consistent advocacy for the Global South in international forums reflects its commitment to ensuring that developing nations play a pivotal role in shaping the global agenda. Jaishankar’s remarks resonate with the broader vision of establishing a multipolar world where all nations, regardless of economic status, have a voice.
As the Global South faces unprecedented challenges including climate change, economic disparities, and technological advancements, the clarion call for unity and collective action has never been more critical. Jaishankar’s leadership in mobilizing these nations represents a significant step toward addressing their shared concerns and enhancing their collective bargaining power on the global stage.
