The Railway Department recently revealed its plans to extend the Vande Bharat Express, currently operating between Katra and Srinagar, to originate from Jammu. Divisional Railway Manager Jammu, Vivek Kumar, confirmed this development, stating preparations are underway to facilitate this significant expansion.
Initially issued earlier this year, the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service has already transformed travel dynamics by significantly reducing travel time between the Valley and the base camp of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. This extension to Jammu aims to enhance regional connectivity, benefiting the local populace, pilgrims, and tourists alike.
Vivek Kumar explained that the extension plan faced delays primarily due to substantial damage sustained by railway tracks from recent floods and incessant rains. He assured that restoration works are moving quickly, adding, “We are working on it. The delay occurred because of massive damage to tracks due to floods and heavy rains. But sooner or later, this service will be available to the people of Jammu.”
The officials are optimistic about launching the expanded service once all safety clearances are obtained. After its operational commencement, the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat train is expected to run daily, offering enhanced travel comfort and substantially reducing journey times in comparison to existing rail and road alternatives.
