As unrest continues in Ladakh, curfew remains in effect in Leh for the third consecutive day as of Friday. A team from the Union Home Ministry is actively assessing the security situation following widespread protests.
Authorities confirmed that no significant incidents have occurred since the curfew began on Wednesday evening. The unrest emerged after protests demanded statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, resulting in four fatalities and over ninety injuries.
Despite the curfew, regions across Ladakh have seen relative calm. Officials hinted that they might relax curfew restrictions to allow residents to engage in essential activities later Friday. However, law enforcement has detained more than 50 individuals in connection with the protests.
In efforts to maintain order, police and paramilitary forces patrol the streets of Leh. District Magistrate Romil Singh has declared all educational institutions, including government and private schools and colleges, closed for two days starting Friday.
A high-level team from the Ministry of Home Affairs arrived in Leh on Thursday to evaluate the ongoing situation and manage potential risks. Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta addressed the unrest, emphasizing, “The videos being circulated are deliberate attempts to disturb peace in Ladakh. We cannot allow the future of our youth to be compromised. Any such incidents will be dealt with under a zero-tolerance policy.”
As authorities navigate this critical situation, they aim to balance maintaining order while addressing the legitimate demands of the population.
