Engineer Rashid To Begin Hunger Strike In Tihar Jail Ahead Of Gandhi Jayanti

Sheikh Abdul Rashid, a Lok Sabha MP from Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla, plans to embark on a two-day hunger strike starting October 1, 2023, in Tihar Jail. His action aims to emphasize the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s principles of non-violence. Rashid, currently detained on charges of terror funding, believes the world is in dire need of peace.

In a letter addressed to Mahatma Gandhi, which was also sent to the Lok Sabha Speaker, he expressed his anguish over the pervasive violence around the world. He stated, “Nations indulge in violence even while professing to fight for peace.” This sentiment reflects Rashid’s belief that Gandhi’s teachings are crucial now more than ever.

Rashid criticized those who adopt Gandhi’s message of non-violence yet fail to align their actions with it. He articulated his concerns about Kashmir, saying, “We Kashmiris are branded as anti-national and extremists, despite our pursuit of peace.”

The MP recalled Gandhi’s approach during the violent Partition of India. He noted that Gandhi viewed Kashmir as a “beacon of hope,” which further exaggerated the stark contrast with the current state of affairs in the valley.

He added, “Our legitimate political and human rights remain unaddressed,” illustrating the plight faced by many in Kashmir. Rashid voiced frustrations that even criticism of the UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) often remains silent out of fear.

Discussing the plight of Kashmiri Pandits, Rashid asserted, “They were once protected by Kashmiri Muslims at the cost of their lives and still live as refugees.” The tragic narratives of displacement resonate deeply within Kashmir’s tumultuous history.

Rashid’s letter further condemned the divisive politics prevalent in India, stating that Gandhi’s vision of non-violence has been overshadowed by the rise of “draconian policies.” He professed a belief that “the state enjoys our helplessness, while our commitment to non-violence is seen as weakness.”

He metaphorically described Jammu and Kashmir as an experimental lab where these policies manifest freely. He pondered, “Your soul must be restless witnessing our suffering since 1989,” addressing Gandhi directly in his poignant remarks.

Rashid also called out the societal labeling of Muslims as outsiders. He asserted, “Ultranationalists are accomplishing what external enemies cannot,” highlighting the internal challenges facing Muslims in India.

To draw attention to this urgent need for peace, Sheikh Abdul Rashid’s hunger strike will commence at 10 AM on October 1st and conclude on October 3rd at 10 AM. His action serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights and the essence of Gandhi’s message of non-violence.
