Former President Ramnath Kovind addressed the annual Vijayadashmi rally of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Thursday, expressing concern that many “good people” shy away from politics. He urged the youth to actively participate in the nation’s political landscape, emphasizing the need for constructive engagement.
Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd at Reshimbagh ground, Kovind highlighted the significant influence of RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his own life. He stated, “I was inspired by the values of national unity and social harmony shared by Dr. Ambedkar and Dr. Hedgewar.” This remark accentuates the transformative impact these leaders had on shaping his worldview.
During his address, Kovind pointed out that the principles of the RSS reject casteism and discrimination. He remarked, “There is no casteism and discrimination in RSS,” reinforcing the organization’s commitment to an inclusive society. His acknowledgment of Hedgewar’s “vichar” or thoughts served as a reminder of the enduring values that resonate with many Indians today.
The former president lamented the absence of engaged and ethical individuals in the political arena, saying, “We see many good people shying away from politics.” He believes that the youth should take up the mantle of governance and civic responsibility, ensuring that the voices of integrity are heard in the halls of power. He concluded with an announcement about his upcoming book titled ‘Triumph of the Indian Republic,’ intended to inspire future generations.
Furthermore, the Vijayadashmi rally held particular significance as it also commemorated the centenary celebrations of the RSS, which was founded by Hedgewar on Dussehra in 1925. This landmark anniversary underscores the organization’s lasting impact on Indian society and politics.
Kovind’s remarks resonate deeply in today’s context, where the perception of politics often discourages capable individuals from participating. His call to action reflects a growing recognition of the importance of a vibrant and participatory political culture in India.
