On March 1, 2025, Sakeena Itoo, the Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, inaugurated the two-day Annual Sports Meet-2025 at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar. The event took place at the Boys Hostel playground in Bemina, bringing together students, faculty, and medical professionals for a celebration of sports and wellness.
Sakeena Itoo underscored the vital connection between physical and mental well-being among healthcare professionals, noting that such factors significantly influence the quality of healthcare delivery in the region. She praised GMC Srinagar for organizing this important event and stressed the necessity of sports and recreational activities for alleviating stress, particularly for those in the demanding medical fields.
“Health professionals must prioritize their well-being to ensure they provide the best care to patients,” said Itoo. She called on the GMC administration to enhance the facilities at the Boys Hostel playground to promote greater student participation in such extracurricular activities.
The Annual Sports Meet, which falls under the guidance of Chairman Sports Committee Dr. Salim Iqbal, showcases a variety of sporting events. Competitions include cricket, volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis, carrom, and tug of war, alongside traditional athletic events such as 100m, 200m, 400m, relays, shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw.
Fun games, including matka race, sack race, and spoon and egg race, infused a vibrant spirit into the gathering, fostering teamwork and camaraderie among participants. The event not only serves as a platform for physical challenges but also enhances overall holistic well-being for medical professionals and students.
The launch of the sports meet was attended by notable figures including Principal Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, Administrator Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, along with Heads of Departments, Medical Superintendents, students, faculty members, and staff. Their presence underscored the community’s support for sports initiatives aimed at enriching student life at GMC Srinagar.
Healthcare professionals face high levels of stress due to the inherent demands of their roles. By integrating sports into their routine, GMC Srinagar aims to create a healthier work-life balance among its community members, ultimately leading to enhanced patient care. Itoo’s commitment to prioritizing health through sports reflects a broader strategy to improve healthcare delivery systems.
The ongoing sports meet not only promises to be a competitive platform but also a critical step in advancing health and wellness awareness among healthcare workers in the region.
