Dr. Jitendra Singh Reviews IMD’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning System

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh, visited the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today. He reviewed the innovative Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (DSS), developed indigenously by IMD, which has led to a remarkable cost saving of ₹250 crore.

Dr. Singh praised IMD for creating a self-reliant and technology-driven platform that enhances disaster preparedness and promotes public safety across the nation. He noted how the DSS, by eliminating dependence on foreign technology, contributes to India’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” while saving an additional ₹5.5 crore in annual maintenance costs.

The Minister reviewed the Mausamgram initiative, which translates to “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam.” This citizen-focused weather information platform offers hyperlocal forecasts at the village level, empowering residents with accurate weather data. Users can easily access forecasts based on PIN code, location name, state, district, block, or gram panchayat. Notably, Mausamgram provides hourly forecasts for 36 hours, three-hourly forecasts for five days, and six-hourly forecasts for up to ten days, all available in official Indian languages.

IMD has successfully modernized its forecast and alert generation process. The adoption of advanced technologies has extended the forecast lead time from five to seven days, reduced preparation time by three hours, and improved accuracy by 15-20%. This modernization aligns with Dr. Singh’s vision for enhanced public safety.

During his meeting with IMD officials, Dr. Singh emphasized the need for AI-based tools within the “Mausamgram” initiative. He encouraged the department to make the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System more interactive and user-friendly, ensuring that citizens receive clear and actionable alerts to respond swiftly during disasters.

Dr. Singh also acknowledged the IMD’s recognition with the National Award for e-Governance 2025 at the recent conference in Visakhapatnam. This award highlights IMD’s excellence in delivering digital public services through its DSS.

Moreover, the Minister commended the department for its successes under the Special Swachhata Program, which generated ₹30 lakh from the disposal of e-waste and cleared 600 square meters of space at its premises. He actively participated in the “Special Swachhata Program 5.0” at IMD headquarters, “Mausam Bhavan,” where he planted a sapling in support of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign and honored 50 “Safai Mitras” for their diligent contributions.

Looking towards the future, Dr. Singh unveiled a vision to enhance IMD’s capabilities through Mission Mausam. By 2030, the implementation of advanced meteorological instruments will facilitate 5×5 km-scale hazard forecasting, dynamic impact-based forecasting, and enhanced risk-based early warning systems. This ambitious initiative aims to guarantee last-mile connectivity, ensuring that crucial early warnings reach every household across the country, thereby fulfilling the mission of “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam.”
