National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah praised the Jammu and Kashmir government’s efforts to revive tourism amid recent challenges. He expressed these sentiments during World Tourism Day celebrations on September 27.
Abdullah welcomed the reopening of tourist destinations, acknowledging the government’s swift action following the tragic Pahalgam attack, which left 26 people dead, mostly tourists, earlier this year. His comments come as a significant boost for a region that relies heavily on tourism for its economy.
“As we celebrate the importance of tourism, it is a moment of reflection and renewed commitment for the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Abdullah stated. “Tourism is not just an economic activity here; it is a vital source of livelihood for thousands and integral to our social fabric.”
According to an official statement, he honored the Omar Abdullah-led government, emphasizing its role in restoring tourist confidence during challenging times. The quick and effective response helped reaffirm Jammu and Kashmir’s reputation as a safe and inviting destination.
“These efforts laid a strong foundation for sustainable and long-term tourism growth,” he noted. By discussing sustainable tourism practices, Abdullah reminded stakeholders to prioritize environmental protection and cultural preservation.
The Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has also called for revitalizing tourism, ordering the reopening of various tourist spots that had been closed in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. These measures aim to restore the sector’s vibrancy and ensure safety for visitors.
Welcoming this reopening, the NC chief highlighted the necessity for inclusive development across regions such as Chenab and Pir Panjal, ensuring that tourism benefits all areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Let this World Tourism Day remind us of our shared duty to build a peaceful and welcoming Jammu and Kashmir. We want a space where every visitor feels valued, and tourism-led growth benefits every citizen,” Abdullah concluded, showcasing his commitment to the region’s tourism sector.
