In an unsettling turn of events, four people lost their lives and 30 others sustained injuries during violent clashes between protesters and security personnel in Leh, Ladakh, on Wednesday. The protests aimed at securing statehood for Ladakh and extending the Sixth Schedule provisions showcased the growing unrest in the region.
Witnesses reported that the clashes erupted amid a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), a local conglomerate of various organizations leading the demand for statehood. Protesters engaged in widespread violence, attacking a BJP office and several vehicles.
In response to escalating violence, police had to resort to firing to control the situation. Officials noted that the use of force aimed at restoring order came after demonstrators refused to disperse. Protesters claimed the deaths occurred due to police firing, escalating tensions significantly.
The protests were prompted after two members of a 15-person fasting group were hospitalized on Tuesday evening. These individuals had embarked on a 35-day hunger strike starting September 10, advocating for the region’s statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule, which provides for greater autonomy for tribal regions. The health deterioration of these fasting protesters caused concern and mobilized support among the local population.
Labourers and local traders participated in the demonstration, showcasing a unified front for the demands that they believe will secure their rights. Photographs from the scene captured the heightened tensions, with protesters displaying banners and slogans calling for justice.
Political leaders, including members of the LAB, condemned the violent actions of the state security forces. They urged the central government to engage in dialogue and address their longstanding demands. They emphasized the need for direct communication to resolve the grievances that have led to such unrest in the picturesque region.
Leh, known for its serene landscapes and rich culture, has witnessed sporadic protests in recent months as demands for statehood gain momentum. The LAB has reiterated that achieving statehood and Sixth Schedule extension is vital for the preservation of Ladakh’s culture and way of life.
Local leaders have appealed for calm and stressed that dialogue remains imperative for peace in the region. The Indian government has yet to comment officially on the recent events. However, sources suggest discussions may be imminent to address the core concerns raised by residents.
As the situation develops, authorities are on high alert to prevent further clashes. They have deployed additional security personnel to maintain order while aiming to reassure the local population. As Leh faces this critical juncture, the impacts of these events may resonate through the region for years to come.
