India officially upgraded its technical mission in Kabul to a full-fledged embassy on Friday, a pivotal move aimed at re-establishing diplomatic relations with Afghanistan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced this upgrade during a meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi.
India had previously withdrawn all officials from its embassy in Kabul after the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021. However, to ensure some continuity in diplomatic presence, the nation deployed a technical team in June 2022. The recently upgraded status signals India’s intention to deepen engagement with Afghanistan, particularly in the areas of humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and cooperation on regional security.
“Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan,” said Jaishankar in his opening remarks. He emphasized India’s status as a contiguous neighbor and well-wisher of the Afghan people, expressing deep interest in supporting Afghanistan’s development and progress.
Jaishankar highlighted that India’s long-standing partnership with Afghanistan, which has accomplished several major infrastructure projects, remains strong. He praised the Taliban administration for demonstrating “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns,” especially following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
Focusing on mutual interests, Jaishankar stated that both nations share a commitment to growth, stability, and prosperity while facing the common threat of cross-border terrorism. “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he stressed, reiterating the importance of dialogue and collaboration.
In response, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi described India as a vital regional partner that has historically supported the Afghan populace. He appreciated India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance and emphasized Kabul’s desire to enhance cooperation in trade, infrastructure development, and education.
The upgrade of India’s diplomatic mission in Kabul not only signifies an important diplomatic development but also highlights New Delhi’s strategic re-engagement with the Taliban-led government.
