J&K Cabinet Recommends Assembly Session from October 13

The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) cabinet recommended to the Lieutenant Governor (LG) that the Legislative Assembly convenes on October 13. This decision comes as the region approaches the deadline mandated by the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which stipulates that there should not be a gap longer than six months between Assembly sessions.

The cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, took place on Wednesday morning and involved the participation of all ministers in his cabinet. According to sources, this session is expected to be brief, running from October 13 to 20.

The significance of this upcoming session lies in its timing; the last Assembly meeting concluded on April 29. Based on the provisions of the Reorganisation Act, the assembly must reconvene before October 28 to remain compliant with legislative requirements.

During the forthcoming Assembly session, pressing issues such as statehood and reservation policies are likely to take center stage. The context around these discussions has evolved, as the last session witnessed three key resolutions concerning statehood lapse due to considerable disruptions instigated by the National Conference party. Their actions followed the rejection of an adjournment motion pertaining to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

Sajad Gani Lone, the President of the People’s Conference (PC) and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Handwara, expressed strong discontent regarding the reservations issue during the previous discussions. His critiques have highlighted the government’s handling of reservation policies as a growing concern among the public and political factions alike.

The upcoming session of the Assembly represents a crucial opportunity for discussing long-standing regional grievances and re-evaluating policies that impact the lives of J&K residents. Ensuing debates may address not only statehood but additional key issues that have remained unresolved since the region’s reorganisation in 2019.

The cabinet’s decision to recommend this assembly session reflects ongoing governance processes in J&K, aiming to ensure legislative accountability and responsiveness to public sentiment.
