Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for the direct online transfer to beneficiaries under various welfare schemes aimed at supporting construction workers. The announcement arrived during a critical meeting of the Jammu & Kashmir Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB).
Officials confirmed that this sanctioned amount will flow to all Assistant Labour Commissioners, who will facilitate immediate transfer into the bank accounts of registered construction workers. This move underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the welfare of vulnerable workers in Jammu and Kashmir.
The allocation addresses several essential areas of support. The welfare schemes include:
- Education support
- Disability assistance
- Aid for chronic illness
- Support for next of kin of deceased workers
- Marriage assistance
- Meritorious awards for children of registered workers
During the recent 22nd meeting of JKBOCWWB held in July, Abdullah highlighted the necessity for a broader definition of ‘construction worker’. This approach aims to capture all labourers in the unorganised sector, ensuring that they benefit from welfare measures.
Abdullah reiterated the government’s determination to explore innovative policies that expand the coverage of welfare schemes. He also emphasized the need to secure financial stability for workers and align the Board’s operations with national best practices in labour welfare. “Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support.” remarked Abdullah, affirming his government’s resolve to uphold labour rights and dignity.
Amid these significant announcements, Abdullah also expressed his profound sorrow regarding a tragic incident in Saudi Arabia involving a bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims. This accident, which occurred early this morning in Medina, highlights the vulnerabilities faced by Indian workers abroad.
Initial reports indicate that a bus carrying 46 Indian pilgrims collided with a tanker while journeying from Mecca to Medina. The devastating outcome resulted in 45 fatalities, with only one survivor suffering serious injuries.
As condolences pour in from across the nation, Abdullah has extended heartfelt prayers for the victims’ families and those recovering from injuries. He stated, “My thoughts are with the families of the deceased, and I pray for the quick recovery of the injured.”
The Chief Minister’s dual focus—strengthening labour welfare in Jammu and Kashmir while acknowledging the tragedy of the pilgrims—demonstrates his commitment to both local and global issues affecting the community.
