Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday raised serious allegations against the BJP, claiming that every sixth MP from the ruling party in the Lok Sabha secured their seat through ‘vote chori’. He questioned if these MPs should be referred to as ‘ghuspethiya’, a term used derogatorily by the party itself.
In a strong statement, Gandhi argued that if fair elections were conducted, the BJP would struggle to reclaim even 140 seats in the Lok Sabha. “Through vote theft, individual seats sometimes get stolen, and at other times, an entire government gets constructed. Of the 240 BJP MPs elected to the Lok Sabha, approximately every sixth one has benefited from vote chori,” he expressed in a post on X.
Gandhi’s remarks come in the backdrop of significant BJP victories in recent elections, where the party dominated the assembly polls in states like Bengal and Assam. He emphasized the need to identify these instances of alleged electoral malpractice. “Should we label them ‘ghuspethiya’? And what of Haryana? The entire government is itself ‘ghuspethiya.’ They manipulate institutions to distort voter lists and electoral processes,” he lashed out at the BJP.
The former Congress president further asserted, “Their real fear is the truth. If fair elections were to take place, they would struggle to win even 140 seats today.” Such bold pronouncements echo the ongoing tensions between the Congress and the BJP, especially as the opposition party prepares for upcoming electoral challenges.
On Tuesday, Gandhi also characterized the BJP’s triumphs in Bengal and Assam as a “theft” of the people’s mandate, a statement that has stirred vigorous debate regarding electoral credibility in India. He described these victories as a significant advance in the BJP’s agenda to undermine democracy in the country.
Notably, Gandhi has extended his support to the Trinamool Congress, which faced a crushing defeat against the BJP in the West Bengal elections. He urged those reveling in TMC’s loss to consider the broader implications of such political outcomes. “Some individuals within Congress and elsewhere are gloating about TMC’s defeat. They must recognize that the theft of Assam and Bengal’s mandate represents a significant move by the BJP towards its mission to dismantle Indian democracy,” he mentioned.
He called for a unified front among opposition parties, stating, “Put petty politics aside. This is not only about one party or another; it is about India.”
The BJP emerged victorious in Bengal, successfully ousting the Trinamool Congress, and further secured its third consecutive win in Assam following the assembly polls. These electoral results have fueled ongoing conversations about the future trajectory of democratic practices in India.
