Gulmarg, Sep 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed tourism stakeholders on September 18, 2023, in Gulmarg, expressing strong dissatisfaction with their lack of support for government initiatives aimed at boosting tourism. Abdullah emphasized that the industry’s recovery hinges on collaborative efforts among all parties involved.
In a closed-door meeting at the Gulmarg Convention Centre, Abdullah voiced his frustration, stating that many tourism stakeholders have remained silent during political attacks, thereby hampering effective promotion of the sector. “We need a unified voice to advocate for our economic future,” he urged.

Abdullah, who oversees the tourism portfolio, pointed to various initiatives his government has implemented, including a cycling festival in Pahalgam and a promotional drive following the tragic April 22 terror attack that claimed 26 tourists’ lives. “Without the support of stakeholders, our tourism policies cannot flourish,” Abdullah warned. He made it clear that the lease agreements for hotels and resorts across key destinations—such as Jammu, Katra, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Srinagar, and Gulmarg—would be closely reviewed, signaling a serious need for unity and collaboration.

The Chief Minister also criticized what he termed the “selective leakage” of official orders, where only certain directives signed by him reached the media and opposition figures. He highlighted a recent criticism concerning a proposed tourism promotion visit to Paris, clarifying that neither he nor his advisor, Nasir Aslam Wani, was to attend. Instead, the state was represented by officials and travel associations.
“It’s vital for all stakeholders to communicate transparently and supportively for the betterment of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir,” Abdullah noted, urging a more proactive stance from those involved in the travel and tourism sector.
